Utah 4th District congressional candidate and Marine combat veteran Jonny Larsen today condemned President Donald Trump's decision to initiate military strikes against Iran without Congressional approval, calling the action unconstitutional and a betrayal of his promise of "no new wars."

"President Trump ran on 'no new wars,'" Larsen said. "Today he violated the Constitution and took this country into war without the approval of Congress. Every accusation has been an admission."

Larsen, who completed two combat tours in Iraq, including during the initial invasion and again in 2004 before the first Fallujah conflict, drew direct parallels to the Iraq War.

"I was part of the invasion of Iraq under the premise of weapons of mass destruction that were never found," Larsen said. "We were used to fight a war based on false claims. Now our military is again being used to fight an illegal war, not approved by Congress, under the same premise."

Larsen sharply criticized the administration's conduct of the strikes and warned that escalating conflict with Iran will make Americans less safe.

"We are not the world police," Larsen said. "These attacks will push Iran closer to obtaining nuclear weapons. This war puts every American in danger."

He also raised concerns about the long-term impact on service members returning home from combat.

"When these troops come home, the VA must be there for them," Larsen said. "Instead, this administration has spent the last year cutting veterans' healthcare resources. We cannot continue sending young Americans into harm's way while failing to care for them afterward."

Larsen called on younger voters to increase civic participation ahead of the midterm election.

"We have a voter participation problem we can no longer afford," Larsen said. "Millennials and Gen-Z voters will bear the consequences of today's decisions. If you are not registered, go to vote.utah.gov. If your information needs to be updated, visit dld.utah.gov. It's free, easy, and quick."

"The only way we stop this is at the ballot box."

Jonny Larsen is the Democratic nominee for Utah's 4th Congressional District. A Marine Corps infantry veteran who served from 2000 to 2004 and rose to the rank of Sergeant, Larsen deployed twice to Iraq and was present in Washington, D.C. on September 11, 2001, where he witnessed the attack on the Pentagon and later stood as part of the first Honor Guard at Ground Zero.
